Chapter 232: A Narrow Escape (3)
At that moment, he was gripped by fear to the point that his limbs stiffened.
He had never felt this way before. The feeling of worry, fear and disappointment… In other words, the woman had unwittingly occupied an important position in his heart, a position that was almost equivalent to his beloved and respected mother!
Without giving a second thought, Mu Tingfeng had already left his driver behind, and he rushed in the direction where the gunshot was heard.
It took him some difficulty before he rushed to the scene, and he was greeted by the sight of the pursuers lying everywhere on the floor, struggling in pain, and an ongoing intense fight not far away from him.
A hint of puzzlement flashed across Mu Tingfeng’s expression. Immediately after, he was snapped out of his daze. He picked up something from the floor, and he quietly sneaked to Zhao Youlin’s side.
The moment he held Zhao Youlin’s wrist, Mu Tingfeng finally recovered from his initial panic. No one knew how intense his emotions had fluctuated at that moment.
Mu Tingfeng’s mind raced, yet he did not show the slightest bit of hint on the surface. He said in a low voice, “Let’s not talk about this now. Where’s my mother?”
When Mu Tingfeng mentioned Su Ruixin, Zhao Youlin’s attention was immediately drawn away. She leaned closer to Mu Tingfeng, and she whispered to him, “I asked her to hide first.”
Zhao Youlin had been very focused on defending herself in the front. She did not notice how flirtatious the way the two had looked as they leaned close to each other. The reason they kept each other so close was to keep the pursuers from noticing them.
Zhao Youlin decided to lower her volume. So, she instinctively leaned close to him. They were so close that there was practically no distance between their faces.
Mu Tingfeng felt Zhao Youlin’s breath on his cheek. Without Zhao Youlin noticing, he was so bashful that his ears reddened.
Luckily, President Mu resisted himself from succumbing to the temptation in front of him so easily. He pulled out a gun from his side, and he stuffed it into Zhao Youlin’s hand.
Zhao Youlin froze. She looked at the gun, and she asked in puzzlement, “Where did you get this from?”
Mu Tingfeng took out another gun expressionlessly. He loaded the chamber, and he said, “I picked them up from the ground.”
Zhao Youlin fell speechless. She recalled the two pursuers whose shoulders had been shot by her. Could the man beside her have picked up the guns from them?
Regardless, Zhao Youlin felt more secure with weapons on hand.
The two leaned close to each other until the pursuers who had separated into groups to search for them came in their direction.
The rustling sound of shoes stepping on the weeds blended with the noises made by the small animals that were running and playing around in the woods.
While the two had gotten themselves prepared, ready to rise up and fight the group of people as they approached them like power stored in a spring, a loud siren was heard outside the woods.
The pursuers who were in hot pursuit as well as Zhao Youlin and Mu Tingfeng who were hiding among the bushes, froze.
The next moment, Zhao Youlin heard the pursuers cursing in unison. One of them whispered, “Boss, what should we do? The cops are coming.”
The boss raised his hand and slapped the person. He sounded anxious and angry, “What else can we do? Retreat!”
“H-How… How about that woman? The client will pay us only if she dies.”
“Pay us, my foot! If you don’t leave now, count your money in jail! Now, go!”
Zhao Youlin narrowed her eyes after listening to their dialogues. ‘Client? So, someone couldn’t wait to take my life away, huh?’
After watching the group of aggressive pursuers leave, the two finally rose up from the bushes.
Zhao Youlin stretched out her hand to brush the weeds off her clothes. She casually asked, “Did you lodge a police report?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Then… Could it be Uncle Xiao?” Before Zhao Youlin finished speaking, she was abruptly pulled into his arms by the man next to her.
Zhao Youlin froze. Her expression changed slightly. She stretched out her hand, wanting to push away the man before her, only to realize his hand was as strong as steel. No matter how hard she struggled to break herself free, his hands did not move at all.
“Mu Tingfeng, what are you doing?! Let me go!” Zhao Youlin shouted angrily after knowing she could not break herself free from his arms. However, the response she got was…
“Don’t move. Let me hug you for a while longer. Just a while longer.” It had taken him great pains to restrain himself from pulling her into his arms, not willing to let go of her even if it cost his life the moment he saw her. He wanted to make sure she was safe and sound.
Mu Tingfeng felt the warmth and regular breathing of the person in his arms, as well as his own pulse that came from his hand. For the first time in President Mu’s life, who was also an atheist, he was very grateful that the gods did not take this person away from his life.
While Mu Tingfeng’s heart was pumping with excitement, Zhao Youlin was emotionally not stable as well. ‘What happened to Mu Tingfeng? Why did he actually say something like that to me, as if to… soften me up? Could he be demon-possessed?’
Above all, after hearing his words, her heart skipped uncontrollably!
Zhao Youlin’s feeling of awkwardness did not last long. Soon, she heard the sound of footsteps and shouting coming from not far away from them.
Zhao Youlin immediately pushed herself away from the man before her as soon as she heard the noises. She lowered her head and tidied her disheveled clothes.
After she finished tidying herself, she wondered why she had been so nervous. Was she feeling nervous out of guilt?! Apparently, it was the man next to her who took the initiative to pull her into his arms. If he did not feel guilty at all, why did she have to feel so?!
Thinking of this, Zhao Youlin turned back and looked at Mu Tingfeng, only to find him stoic-faced, and he was paying attention, looking at the people coming for them not far away. It was as if the vulnerability he showed to her just now was only her own imagination.
‘Do you really think you’re superior just because you don’t wear any emotions on your sleeve?!’ Zhao Youlin gritted her teeth. She glared at Mu Tingfeng sharply from the corners of her eyes, and she turned her head back.
While Zhao Youlin was throwing a tantrum to herself out of nowhere, unbeknownst to her, the moment she turned back, the man in front of her withdrew his gaze, turned around and looked at her. His eyes were filled with gentleness and adoration. Not even anyone who knew him had seen him like this before.
“General Manager.”
“President Mu!”
Xia Zhetao and Xiao Jingyao’s voices were the most prominent among the rest. A group of black-clad bodyguards followed them.
“General Manager, are you alright?” Xiao Jingyao’s usual calm and composed expression finally cracked a little to show a hint of worry and panic.
While he was on the way rushing over to her, he had wondered countless times what would come to his sight in case he did not make it on time. Fortunately… It was not too late.
“I’m fine. The driver is unconscious inside the car. Have you guys found him?”
Xiao Jingyao froze. He nodded, and he said, “I found him. I’ve had someone pull him out of the car. He’s been sent to the hospital.”
Zhao Youlin heaved a sigh of relief, “Good.”
